Collateral Examinations

A collateral examination or field examination is an analysis and written evaluation of a borrower’s collateral, focused primarily on accounts receivable and inventory. As financial institutions obtain real ezstate and equipment appraisals to support term loans, collateral exams are obtained to evaluate the borrower’s accounts receivable, inventory, internal processes, and procedures.

Banks and asset-based lenders rely on this examination to ensure that sufficient and authentic collateral is in place to support the proposed or existing loan. In addition, the examination assists the lender in understanding the collateral and any risks or other issues that might be associated with the pledged assets. Bank regulators see collateral exams as an integral tool in monitoring accounts receivable and inventory financing. They are a standard way to confirm the quality of the borrower’s financial data, collateral, internal controls and the borrower’s ability to report accurate data to their financial institution.

The exam can take between 1 and 5 days to complete and assists with recommending advance rates as well as identifying the strengths and weakness of the underlying collateral. With a completed collateral examination, banks will have the necessary information to make a sound credit decision.
